Manipulation skills refer to the ability to move and position objects by means of throwing, rolling, catching, bouncing, hitting or kicking. Hand-eye and foot-eye coordination is very important in the development of motor skills.
Activity 1:
In this activity, we focused on the development of the child’s core muscles while he was throwing beanbags with both his hand while crossing his midline.
Activity 2:
In this activity, we combined a static balance activity with a manipulation skills activity. The aim of this activity was for the child to keep his balance while throwing to the different color balloons.

Welcome to the apparatus room, were the ideas on paper start to come to life! This space in PRETLand is allocated to store all apparatus used in the various programs for service delivery, training of students (WIL) and research purposes.
Currently, students in the Kinderkinetics Honnors program have access and use of the apparatus. Apparatus is sanitized and cleaned after each lesson and checked annually for damage or repairs.
This room ensures safe keeping for apparatus and students make use of a check-in and check-out library system to access the apparatus.

The enclosed tennis practice court is mainly used during manipulating activities including, throwing, kicking, rolling, or hitting activities. By performing these activities inside the enclosed space, it helps the Kinderkinetist / researcher to have more control of the objects being manipulated.
These activities are either being performed during sport development programmes or during research projects. The activity that is seen in this video/photo is an activity that is used for research projects and evaluates a participant’s kicking technique as well as kicking accuracy.

The balance test forms part of a motor coordination assessment where the participant is required to walk backwards along a balance beam that decreases in width.
The participant is required to walk backward three times along each of the three balance beams that vary in height and width. The aim is for the participant to keep steady while walking backwards on the bar.

The wellness hall is used to provide programmes to children to develop an active, healthy lifestyle by encouraging both girls and boys to get moving via fun, gender-appropriate exercises.
Wellness is important to attain better physical and mental health by practicing healthy habits. For girls, the main focus is on aerobic dancing and educational healthy lessons. For boys, physical conditioning using the child’s body weight plays an important part.
The aim is to grow the love for movement that is required to conduct activities and skills. The wellness programmes enhance concentration ability, cardiovascular effectiveness, increase creativity and decrease psychological problems.

The test forms part of evaluating general motor competence. The participant is required to jump from side to side over a wooden slat as many times as possible in 15 seconds with speed. The speed of the jumps is evaluated.

This part of the wellness hall is used during the GO-Girls program. During this program, the main focus is on aerobic dancing and educational healthy lessons.
This program also addresses social and psychological interaction between individuals, while leading not only to improved motor skills but also the development of social and psychological skills.
Furthermore, it helps the girls with the maintenance of a healthy and balanced lifestyle, improve their quality of life and is presented in group format.

The netball hard courts are mainly being used for three purposes, including research, sport development programmes as well as Health- and Wellness programmes.
By performing specific activities on these hard courts, it provides a more real-life experience for participants when learning new skills. Furthermore, as this courts are much bigger than an inside training facility, more efficient aerobic training activities can be exercised on the hard courts.
An example is the super circuit-programme: The super circuit program consists of nine stations which focus on strength training, muscle endurance and cardio-vascular endurance. The instructions are clearly stated at each station. After every strength training station, a cardiovascular-endurance station (steps ups) follows.

During this activity we focused on the development of shoulder strength, core muscles and hand strength that could benefit the child’s gross and fine motor development. During this activity the child first had to throw the beanbags through a target by only using his feet.
Next we wanted him to swing down the monkey bars, where this helps to facilitates in planning on how to move forward, develops the perception of his body’s position in the space as well as helps with the improvement of his posture, just to name a few things.

Balance is also referring to as stability skills and can be divided into static and dynamic balance, and is the ability to maintain a stable posture in various positions.
Balance plays an important role in the development and improvement of activities which are prerequisites for effective movement.
In this session we worked on the child’s static and dynamic balance. We also complete the circuit backwards to make this exercise more challenging for the child.

Spatial awareness is the ability of a child to understand where they are in relation to objects or where objects or structures are in relation to each other and their environment.
It also refers to understanding how an object change in relation to them when they move. There are many ways to develop spatial awareness including obstacle courses, building and creating using Legos, blocks or puzzles, practice completing patterns and movement games.
Here our obstacle course includes the child jumping over various objects, climb underneath objects and integrate bilateral coordination. This will help to improve the child’s spatial awareness and coordination.
