As part of the dietetics degree, students learn how to take anthropometrical measurements. Examples of these are skinfold, weight, height and circumference measurements.
The interpretation of these measurements provides valuable information with regards to body composition and nutritional status. This aids in setting nutrition goals and prescribing suitable diets. Anthropometric measurements can also be used to monitor growth and the efficacy of dietary interventions.

A great part of a dietitian’s work is nutritional education. When providing nutrition education to an individual, a dietitian will firstly determine the usual dietary intake using different food props and household utensils.
This allows for dietary guidelines to be individualized according to the individual’s lifestyle and health.
Dietitians also often provide nutrition education to larger groups – either in face-to-face sessions or via print- and social media. Throughout the dietetics degree, students are taught how to give effective nutrition education to ensure behavioural modification.

One of the areas that dietitians can work in is Therapeutic Nutrition. These dietitians provide nutrition therapy for patients with various medical conditions.
This may include providing special diets, tube feeds and intravenous feeds.
As part of the dietetics degree, students will have various therapeutic nutrition modules. There will also be practical sessions where students visit hospitals and clinics to assess the nutritional status of patients and prescribe the correct dietary treatment for these patients.

The Nutrition Department at the North-West University is one of the few institutions in South Africa equipped with a BodPod and Dual Energy X ray Absorptiometry equipment, also known as DEXA.
These tools provide valuable and accurate information regarding body composition measurements e.g. fat mass, lean body mass, bone density etc. Dietetics students have the opportunity to work with this equipment and learn how to interpret and use their results.

This is one of the laboratories in the Nutrition department. We are equipped with 6 laboratories including Chromatography-, Analytical-, Haemostasis-, Nutrigenetics-, and Micro-Nutrient laboratories.
In these laboratories, we analyze samples for research purposes and teach students about laboratory practices, safety and quality control.
As part of the dietetics degree, students have modules like physiology, chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology where they will learn how to do experiments and research in laboratories.
